Mission Statement
Recognizing the desire and need to assert our ethnic and cultural heritage, and the need to provide our members the opportunity for growth through musical and social means, the establishment of this group is intended to engender and perpetuate the value of our Slovak ancestral heritage as well as to provide our members the opportunities for expression and growth.
Objectives
1. The primary objective of PÁS is to teach music, dance, and customs of the Slovak Heritage.
2. Our members should be afforded access to their cultural identity and to their part of the rich cultural heritage of the Slovak peoples. This folk ensemble is to provide and opportunity for learning and growth and an expression of creativity in these performing arts, and thus our youngest generation here in America will develop a cultural pride in their heritage and will have the desire to preserve and perpetuate the value of this ethnic heritage for coming generations.
3. There is to be the concern for cultural authenticity and the constant striving for high artistic and aesthetic standards.
4. For the participants, both performers and parents, this organization is to provide the opportunity for contributing toward general and technical research in matters concerning the music, dance and customs.
5. To establish and sustain a viable folk orchestra.
6. To obtain an authentic (looking) collection of costumes for group wear that shall be representative of the regions of Slovakia.
7. To make a series of quality folk recordings.
8. To promote group attendance at all related cultural events, i.e. The Pittsburgh Folk Festival, Slovak Day, etc.
9. To publish an artistic collection of Slovak songs and dances with complete English translation and artful illustrations contributed largely from talent within the group.
10. European performing tour.
11. To establish a properties committee with differentiated responsibilities to deal with caring for specific properties.
12. To have and maintain a collection of cultural display items that can be used to service a Slovak display booth.
13. To have a yearly concert of at least one and a half hours in length.
14. To put the entire dance repertoire on film as a valuable reference tool.
15. To establish a seasonal mailing list aimed at festivals, bazaars, Slovak parishes, conventions, affairs banquets, picnics, etc.
